Whelan Wins Record Five Golds At Track Masters: Adamstown Veteran Brendan Whelan (Cycling Pursuits) set a new standard by Winning All Five Events in the Masters Track Championships held at Sundrive Velodrome on Sunday (July 1st). Brendan's Team mate and younger brother Fergus rounded off a perfect day by winning a Bronze and a Silver before joining the Team of Brendan, and Orwell Wheelers Eddie Lynch to Win Gold in the Team Sprint.
The entire program from Day 1 (Saturday) was moved to Sunday, making it a long hard day for any cyclist hoping to be competitive in all events. The 3Km Pursuit final saw Whelan paired with top Sundrive Track rider Sean Curtis. Sean was ahead after the second lap, and would stay there until he faded towards the end, leaving Brendan with a very hard fought first Gold. Aidan Reade from Black Rose won the battle for Bronze with Tralee CCs Peter White The riders had to immediately set up bikes for the 500M TT, with Whelan again setting the fastest time, Curtis finished in Silver, with Fergus Whelan taking Bronze in his first event of the day. The riders then lined up for the 12 Lap Scratch Race, with the Whelans leading home the Bunch for Gold and Silver. Brendan qualified second for the Sprint Finals, with Fergus failing to make the cut. Brendan beat Aidan Reade 1-0 in the Semi final before Winning the Gold 2-0 against Curtis. The final event was the 135+ Team Sprint. Brendan is a current reigning Elite National Champion, and Fergus an Elite Bronze Medalist in this three man discipline. Eddie Lynch (Orwell Wheelers) was already on a great day, and when he agreed to ride first man, they were always going to be hard to beat. The Trio set a great time to take Gold, beating the previous best set by the Sundrive Track Team. Full Results to Follow @ trackcycling.ie |
