Ryan Wins Three Irish Championships: Adamstown rider Ryan Whelan competed in the Youth National Track Championships at Sundrive Velodrome on Saturday (July 21st) winning Gold in all three U12 events. Ryan went with the intention of defending his coveted National Sprint title but ended the day on the top step of the podium for all three National Track Titles.
Ryan comes from a multi National Medal winning family, and at only 12 this was his fourth National Championships, and this experience showed early on, as he arrived on the day on top form. He signalled his intent early on, setting the fastest qualifying time for the Sprint, ensuring an easier route to the final.
Ryan then lined up for the 100M Standing Start Time Trial, where he was told by his Coach that the previous rider (Cian May from Lucan) had set a time almost a second faster than his personal best. Ryan rose to the challenge going over half a second faster again to Win the first Gold of the day.
Ryan then qualified comfortably for the Sprint final, where he would again meet Cian May, who had battled through the other side of the draw. Ryans experience showed in the Final, as he proved too fast for May to take his second Gold.
Whelan was marked closely in the Scratch Race, and it came down to a bunch sprint , with Ryan leading them home after controlling the race on the last lap.
