Roisin Kennedy put in a good battling performance in the National Road Race Championships at the weekend against strong Professional opposition and the best of the Home and Internationally based Irish women.

Click Here For A Report On The 2007 Race: The race was dominated by a severe climb, that the riders had to tackle 8 times - Kennedy started the tough course well, staying at the front on the hill for the first two laps. Although the initial pace was steady - Three riders lost contact on the first climb – and a further 10 on the next ascent. A sudden acceleration on lap three however saw Kennedy distanced from the leaders. Roisin was chasing hard – and soon formed part of a chase group containing experienced riders Jenny Mcauley (Bray) and Orla Hendron (Orwell). Up front - four times winner Siobhan Dervan (Fenix) was powering clear of Olivia Dillon (Touchstone Racing USA) and Louise Moriarty (Swift Racing). Roisin continued putting in the bulk of the work in the chase group behind with Mcauley keeping the pace high on the climb. Kennedys group began losing a lot of time in the closing laps as riders started to save themselves for the minor placings. After finishing 6th twice and 3rd in recent years – Roisin ignored her Team Cars race radio instructions to ease back a bit, and continued to work too hard until she began to fade in the final laps when her efforts took their toll. Only 14 Women finished the tough course out of a very strong starting field. Roisin would like to thank her Lucan Team mates James Kirwan, Enda Connolly and Daniel Kirwan – who gave her encouragement throughout the race – taking time out from their Senior Mens Event preparation. 1, Siobhan Dervan (Fenix) 83.2 kilometres in 2 hours 26 minutes 11 seconds 2, Louise Moriarty (Swift Racing/UCD) at 2 mins 24 seconds 3, Heather Wilson (Maryland Wheelers) same time 4, Fiona Meade (St. Finbarr’s) at 4 minutes 18 seconds 5, Olivia Dillon (Touchstone Cycling) at 6 minutes 43 seconds 6, Jenny McCauley (Bray Wheelers) at 7 minutes 18 seconds 7, Heather Boyle (Ravens CTC) at 8 minutes 18 seconds 8, Orla Hendron (Orwell Dundrum Town Centre) at 8 minutes 30 seconds 8, Roisin Kennedy (Stagg’s Lucan) same time 9, Emma Walsh (Dungarvan) 10, Sadhbh Baxter (West Coast Wheelers) 11, Elaine Cawley (Castlebar) at 19 minutes 51 seconds 12, Cathy Flynn (Lakeside) at 22 minutes 14 seconds 13, Sarah Piner (Lakeside) at 1 lap 14, Heather Purcell (Slaney CC) same |
